[NSFW: immature language, humor] • From 1982 through 1986, The Avant-Garage Holiday Songwriting Festival collected mostly irreverent (sometimes wildly irreverent) songs in the winter holiday spirit... someone's winter holiday spirit, anyway. It was a super low tech -- and even lower fi -- festival of noisy DIY recordings done on a motley collection of boomboxes, ping-ponged cassette decks, and a couple of broke down four track reel-to-reels by a number of folks in the outsider music scene in Long Beach and Seal Beach (California) in the mid-1980s.
Among the participants were no wave chanteuse Ann DeJarnett (of cult favorite Mnemonic Devices), now well known art photog Jeff Conn, the late Long Beach painter Kurt Schnyder, and Tom Holland, aka Monte Vista, the smarmy club scene habitue whose often terrifyingly hilarious lounge band from hell, Lovingkindness, was/is the grandaddy of all lounge bands from hell. Here, Monte/Tom plays a very, very tweaked lead guitar for Burl Ives Army on their "I'm Gonna Blow Up a Toy store (If I Don't Get a Cabbage Patch Doll for Christmas)"...
These tracks are also available commercially at a very reasonable price if you'd like to chip into the support of the Festival Archives. www.lazybeat.com/AvantGarageHolidaySong/
